My personal model of counseling begins with Alfred Adler’s belief that an individual begins to form an approach to life in the first 6 years of life (Cory, 2013). Because of this belief I refer to Erik Erikson’s psychosocial stages of development, particularly the infancy, early childhood, preschool and elementary age stages. As a Registered Play Therapist I will be able to provide mental health therapy for some of the youngest children in the Northern Alabama area. Play therapy serves the many needs of children who have been abused physically, emotionally, and mentally; many even before they were born.

The Association for Play Therapy (APT) explains that play is the language that children use to communicate their feelings, experiences, fears, and dreams of the future; whenever possible I use techniques of play therapy to help the children become more responsible for their behaviors and develop more successful coping strategies.

As a counselor and a child of God I am to “do the right thing for the weak and without a father (Psalm 82:3a, NLV) and to see to it that those who are poor and those who are beaten down are treated fairly (Psalm 82:3b, NIRV).” In my practice will serve this population and more to include children with ADHD, ASD, grief, RAD, anxiety and Selective Mutism.
